Novel arguments : reading innovative American fiction / Digitally printed version.
Richard Walsh.
简介:Novel Arguments deals with American innovative (postmodern, metafictional, experimental) fiction since the sixties. It advances a concept of the "argument" of fiction to correct criticism's too purely formal interest in innovation. The book closely examines the readings of five important innovative novels by Donald Barthelme, Ishmael Reed, Robert Coover, Walter Abish, and Kathy Acker and shows how they achieve an effective articulation of their concerns by virtue of their innovation, which is aimed at a making new of fictional cognition.
作者: Ted C. Fishman 著
简介:A lively, fact-packed account of China's spectacular, 30-year transformation from economic shambles following Mao's Cultural Revolution to burgeoning market superpower, this book offers a torrent of statistics, case studies and anecdotes to tell a by now familiar but still worrisome story succinctly. Paid an average of 25 cents an hour, China's workers are not the world's cheapest, but no nation can match this "docile and capable industrial workforce, groomed by generations of government-enforced discipline," as veteran business reporter (and Chicago Mercantile trading firm founder) Fishman characterizes it. Since Mexican wages were (at the time) four times those of China, NAFTA's impact has been dwarfed by China's explosive growth (about 9.5% a year), and corporations and entrepreneurs operating in China have few worries about minimum wages, pensions, benefits, unions, antipollution laws or worker safety regulations. For the U.S., Fishman predicts more of what we're already seeing: deficits, declining wages and the squeezing of the middle class. His solutions (revitalize education, close the trade gap) are not original, but some of his statistics carry a jolt: since 1998, prices in the U.S. have risen 16%, but they've fallen in nearly every category where China is the top exporter; a pair of Levis bought at Wal-Mart costs less today, adjusted for inflation, than it did 20 years ago—though the company no longer makes clothes in China. ※ 32組團體包括以下多位全球頂尖設計師 >>時尚設計: Martin Margiela(比利時享譽國際時尚界的解構設計師、知名安特衛普六君子代表性設計師、曾任Hermes創意總監。) >>平面設計:Stefan Sagmeister(獲葛萊美唱片包裝藝術指導獎項,與Lou Reed、 the Rolling Stones、 Talking Heads等多人合作。) >>產品設計:以手工享譽全球的設計品牌Artecnica(Time、Wallpaper等雜誌封面報導品牌)及推動再生設計不遺餘力的英國設計組織[re]design。 >>網路設計:Jonathan Harris(2006年Yahoo!「Time Capsule時間膠囊計畫」設計師、獲得Webby∕AIGA等國際知名設計獎項)。 >>廣告設計:KesselsKramer(《Archive》雜誌評為最有創意的廣告公司,跨界推出「DO」這個強調消費者積極參與的概念性品牌)

Murakami's latest is a nonfiction work mostly concerned with his thoughts on the long-distance running he has engaged in for much of his adult life. Through a mix of adapted diary entries, old essays, reminiscences and life advice, Murakami crafts a charming little volume notable for its good-natured and intimate tone. While the subject matter is radically different from the fabulous and surreal fiction that Murakami (The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle) most often produces, longtime readers will recognize the source of the isolated, journeying protagonists of the author's novels in the formative running experiences recounted. Murakami's insistence on focusing almost exclusively on running can grow somewhat tedious over the course of the book, but discrete, absorbing episodes, such as a will-breaking 62-mile ultramarathon and a solo re-creation of the historic first marathon in Greece serve as dynamic and well-rendered highlights. Murakami offers precious little insight into much of his life as a writer, but what he does provide should be of value to those trying to understand the author's long and fruitful career. An early section recounting Murakami's transition from nightclub owner to novelist offers a particularly vivid picture of an artist soaring into flight for the first time. (Aug.) ~From School Library Journal
Grade 1-4?The story of a young girl helping her father trade someof their possessions for basic necessities in war-torn El Salvadorseems an unlikely topic for an easy reader. However, this poignantnarrative, told from the child's perspective, is straightforwardand speaks to the heart. Maria never intended to trade her stuffedbear, but her sensitivity to her family's circumstances helps herto make the difficult decision. A general map and glossary (with apronunciation guide) for the eight Spanish words/phrases used inthe text precede the five chapters. The Spanish blends easily withthe English text and the meaning is also made clear in context.Sandin's watercolors add to the emotional impact of this beginningreader and do an effective job of setting the scene. An author'snote intended for adults briefly explains about the war that tookplace in the 1980s. This sensitive and compelling title will bewelcome in all libraries, particularly those serving refugees fromEl Salvador.?Gale W. Sherman, Pocatello Public Library, ID

Fundamentals of cognitive psychology / 7th ed.

Century of Hong Kong financial development
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize. In this "artful, informative, and delightful" (William H. McNeill, New York Review of Books) book, Jared Diamond convincingly argues that geographical and environmental factors shaped the modern world. Societies that had had a head start in food production advanced beyond the hunter-gatherer stage, and then developed religion --as well as nasty germs and potent weapons of war --and adventured on sea and land to conquer and decimate preliterate cultures. A major advance in our understanding of human societies, Guns, Germs, and Steel chronicles the way that the modern world came to be and stunningly dismantles racially based theories of human history. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the Phi Beta Kappa Award in Science, the Rhone-Poulenc Prize, and the Commonwealth club of California's Gold Medal. Amazon.com Explaining what William McNeill called The Rise of the Westhas become the central problem in the study of global history. In Guns, Germs, and SteelJared Diamond presents the biologist''s answer: geography, demography, and ecological happenstance. Diamond evenhandedly reviews human history on every continent since the Ice Age at a rate that emphasizes only the broadest movements of peoples and ideas. Yet his survey is binocular: one eye has the rather distant vision of the evolutionary biologist, while the other eye--and his heart--belongs to the people of New Guinea, where he has done field work for more than 30 years. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Library Journal Most of this work deals with non-Europeans, but Diamond''s thesis sheds light on why Western civilization became hegemonic: "History followed different courses for different peoples because of differences among peoples'' environments, not because of biological differences among peoples themselves." Those who domesticated plants and animals early got a head start on developing writing, government, technology, weapons of war, and immunity to deadly germs. (LJ 2/15/97) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc. Alfred W. Crosby, Los Angeles Times3/9/97 Jared Diamond...is broadly erudite, writes in a style that pleasantly expresses scientific concepts in vernacular American English and deals almost exclusively in questions that should interest everyone concerned about how humanity developed. . . .Reading Diamond is like watching someone riding a unicycle, balancing an eel on his nose and juggling five squealing piglets. You may or may not agree with him (I usually do), but he rivets your attention. Guns, Germs, and Steelis his answer to a question proffered by his New Guinean friend, Yali: "Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo [steel axes, umbrellas, matches, soft drinks, etc.- the material stuff of civilization], but we black people had little cargo of our own?" It is an obvious and important question, and one to which professional historians, including myself, tend to react as if we''d discovered a coral snake in the shower...we shy away from Yali''s question because the easiest answer is one that many bray and bray about and others would rather die than utter. Race... Jared Diamond had done us all a great favor by supplying a rock-solid alternative to the racist answer... ...This is a wonderfully interesting book, especially for historians of the usual liberal arts background, who will find the final chapter, "The Future of Hisotry as a Science," alone worth the price of admission. In it, Diamond argues that students of humanity- while they cannot be as precise as physicists and chemists with their laboratory experiments, nor can they run history over again to see if this change can produce that result- have examples and "natural experiments" with which they can fashion informative comparisons. Why did Christendom enthusiastically and permanently adopt the wheel, the key element in most machinery, while the Islamic societies largely discarded it? What happened when syphilis first appeared, as compared to what is happening today with the appearance of AIDS? What is happening to society in the highlands of Diamond''s home-away-from-home, Paupa New Guinea, where people have hurtled from the technology of the stone ax to that of the computer within a lifetime? Diamond''s lesson is this: Think big like our astronomers, who begin their training not by trying to understand the nervous gyrations of the members of the asteroid belt but the simple and stately movements of the major planets over the years, decades and centuries. Think big. "Guns, Germs, and Steel" is a provocative start. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From AudioFile Grover Gardener does as well with scientific material as he does with more traditional literature, giving it spirit and vitality while sounding as interested in the information as readers will be. Although he doesn''t pronounce "bonobo" (pigmy chimp) like the keepers in the zoo, nor "Tenochtitlán" like a Mexican, his technical pronunciation is otherwise flawless. The abridgment to one-third of the original does no serious damage, but only deprives readers the privilege of enjoying more of this Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the evolution of civilization. Few writers could ever take so complex a subject and render it as palatable and memorable as Professor Diamond. J.A.H. © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine--This text refers to the Audio CD edition. From Kirkus Reviews MacArthur fellow and UCLA evolutionary biologist Diamond (The Third Chimpanzee, 1992, etc.) takes as his theme no less than the rise of human civilizations. On the whole this is an impressive achievement, with nods to the historians, anthropologists, and others who have laid the groundwork. Diamond tells us that the impetus for the book came from a native New Guinea friend, Yali, who asked him, ``Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own?'''' The long and short of it, says Diamond, is biogeography. It just so happened that 13,000 years ago, with the ending of the last Ice Age, there was an area of the world better endowed with the flora and fauna that would lead to the take-off toward civilization: that valley of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers we now call the Fertile Crescent. There were found the wild stocks that became domesticated crops of wheat and barley. Flax was available for the development of cloth. There was an abundance of large mammals that could be domesticated: sheep, goats, cattle. Once agriculture is born and animals domesticated, a kind of positive feedback drives the growth toward civilization. People settle down; food surpluses can be stored so population grows. And with it comes a division of labor, the rise of an elite class, the codification of rules, and language. It happened, too, in China, and later in Mesoamerica. But the New World was not nearly as abundant in the good stuff. And like Africa, it is oriented North and South, resulting in different climates, which make the diffusion of agriculture and animals problematic. While you have heard many of these arguments before, Diamond has brought them together convincingly. The prose is not brilliant and there are apologies and redundancies that we could do without. But a fair answer to Yali''s question this surely is, and gratifyingly, it makes clear that race has nothing to do with who does or does not develop cargo.

Created in the style of 2007's Dog, this compact photographicbook showcases as many varieties of cats as it does interactivecomponents. Tabs enable playful motion: on the cover, a gray catdips his paw into a fish bowl; inside, a Bengal swats at a ball ofyarn and a swishing slinky cat tail twitches. Other cats arepictured next to de*ive titles: a fluffy aristocat sits on atuffet while a nice cat dozes next to a parrot. A scraggly catfeatures a furry cutout, while a hairless, scary cat (a Sphynx)lives up to its moniker. The final panels offer portraits of thecast of characters, with their names and breeds. The livelydiversity of felines makes this as appropriate on a coffee table asin a playroom. Ages 2–up. (Feb.)

PreS—Van Fleet follows up the popular Tails (Harcourt, 2003) andDog (S & S, 2007) with this interactive novelty book aimed attoddlers but photographed for cat lovers. Stanton has captured animpressive array of expressions on his subjects: a cheeky Himalayansticking out its tongue, a regally bored Bengal, a gentle KurilianBobtail asleep beside a parrot. The text consists of simple rhymesdesigned to describe different types of cats and what they do. SueStainton's I Love Cats (Harper Collins, 2007) and PatriciaHubbell's I Like Cats (North-South, 2003) are just a couple ofsimilar titles that come to mind. The inclusion of furry tails topat, flaps to lift, and tabs to pull is designed to engage youngreaders, although it will probably just lead to damaged books. Thephotographs are engaging enough and should continue to holdattention after the novelty wears off. Buy where the other VanFleet titles are popular.—Kara Schaff Dean, Walpole Public Library,MA

作者: Amy Tan 著
简介:YA-- Fans of Tan's Joy Luck Club (Putnam, 1989) will love her powerful second novel. Here she creates an absorbing story about the lives of a Chinese mother and her adult American-born daughter. Pressured to reveal to the young woman her secret past in war-torn China in the 1940s, Winnie weaves an unbelievable account of a childhood of loneliness and abandonment and a young adulthood marred by a nightmarish arranged marriage. Winnie survives her many ordeals because of the friendship and strength of her female friends, the love of her second husband, and her own steadfast courage and endurance. At the conclusion, her secrets are uncovered and she shares a trust/love relationship with her daughter, Pearl, that was missing from both their lives. Some YAs may find the beginning a bit slow, but this beautifully written, heartrending, sometimes violent story with strong characterzation will captivate their interest to the very last page. --Nancy Bard, Thomas Jefferson Sci-Tech, Fairfax County, VA Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
