简介:This book deals with a novel and practical advanced method for control of tandem cold metal rolling processes based on the emerging state-dependent Riccati equation technique. After a short history of tandem cold rolling, various types of cold rolling processes are described. A basic mathematical model of the process is discussed, and the diverse conventional control methods are compared. A detailed treatment of the theoretical and practical aspects of the state-dependent algebraic Riccati equation technique is given, with specific details of the new procedure described and results of simulations performed to verify the control model and overall system performance with the new controller coupled to the process model included. These results and data derived from actual operating mills are compared showing the improvements in performance using the new method. Material is included which shows how the new technique can be extended to the control of a broad range of large-scale complex nonlinear processes.

简介:This is an introduction to the basic tools of mathematics needed to understand the relation between knot theory and quantum gravity. The book begins with a rapid course on manifolds and differential forms, emphasizing how these provide a proper language for formulating Maxwell's equations on arbitrary spacetimes. The authors then introduce vector bundles, connections and curvature in order to generalize Maxwell theory to the Yang-Mills equations. The relation of gauge theory to the newly discovered knot invariants such as the Jones polynomial is sketched. Riemannian geometry is then introduced in order to describe Einstein's equations of general relativity and show how an attempt to quantize gravity leads to interesting applications of knot theory.

简介:Sociologist Wrong presents his third collection of essays, all penned between 1995 and 2001. The essays reflect his belief that the era when political ideologies (capitalism, communism, democracy, fascism, etc.) amounted to "secular religions" is a transitory one. He borrows heavily from the communitarianism of Amitai Etzioni in his considerations of the fate of socialism and capitalism; the rise of multiculturalism and identity politics; and the works of C. Wright Mills, Raymond Aron, Digby Baltzell and other influences. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
简介:"In Winning the Peace, historian Nicolaus Mills explores the Marshall Plan in all its dimensions to provide valuable lessons from the past about what America can and cannot do as a superpower." "Mills emphasizes that from the very inception of his plan, George Marshall was blunt about its costs, risks, and limited objectives. Marshall stated repeatedly that his policy would require sacrifices from the American people, mostly in the form of higher taxes, and that its purpose was solely to help stabilize shattered economies long enough for them to regain their pre-war vitality. Although he campaigned tirelessly for months to gain congressional and popular approval, Marshall never soft-peddled the burdens the plan would impose, nor oversold its potential benefits." "Winning the Peace points out the crucial principles in George Marshall's plan that must be present in any successful aid effort, while emphasizing the need to base any contemporary plan on solid knowledge of the region involved, strong relationships with beneficiary nations, and a flexible approach to achieving limited and realistic goals. This study is important reading for anyone interested in American post-war history, foreign policy, and current international affairs."--BOOK JACKET.
简介:From the Publisher: The year is 1896, the place, New YorkCity. On a cold March night New York Times reporter John Schuyler Moore is summoned to the East River by his friendand former Harvard classmate Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a psychologist, or "alienist." On the unfinished Williamsburg Bridge, they view the horribly mutilated bodyof an adolescent boy, a prostitute from one of Manhattan'sinfamous brothels. The newly appointed police commissioner,Theodore Roosevelt, in a highly unorthodox move, enlists the two men in the murder investigation, counting on the reserved Kreizler's intellect and Moore's knowledge of NewYork's vast criminal underworld. They are joined by Sara Howard, a brave and determined woman who works as a secretary in the police department. Laboring in secret (for alienists, and the emerging discipline of psychology, are viewed by the public with skepticism at best), the unlikely team embarks on what is a revolutionary effort incriminology-amassing a psychological profile of the man they're looking for based on the details of his crimes. Their dangerous quest takes them into the tortured past and twisted mind of a murderer who has killed before. And will kill again before the hunt is over. Fast-paced and gripping, infused with a historian's exactitude, The Alienist conjures up the Gilded Age and its untarnished underside: verminous tenements and opulent mansions, corrupt cops and flamboyant gangsters, shining opera houses and seamy gin mills. Here is a New York during an age when questioning society's belief that all killers areborn, not made, could have unexpected and mortal consequences.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 A 30-year veteran of the ecology movement, Mills relates the pleasures as well as the virtues and difficulties of a simpler than average North American life, as she experiences it in the Great Lakes Watershed. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) Publisher Summary 2 "In this book, I relate the pleasures, as well as the virtues and difficulties of a perhaps simpler than average North American life." So begins ecological thinker and writer Stephanie Mills's Epicurean Simplicity, a thoughtful paean to living, like Thoreau, a deliberate life.Mills's account of the simple life reaches deep into classical sources of pleasure -- good food, good health, good friends, and particularly the endless delights of the natural world. Her musings about the life she desires -- and the life she has created -- ultimately led her to the third century Greek philosopher Epicurus, whose philosophy was premised on the trustworthiness of the senses, a philosophy that Mills wholeheartedly embraces. While later centuries have come to associate Epicurus's name with hedonism, Mills discovered that he extolled simplicity and prudence as the surest means to pleasure, and his thinking offers an important philosophical touchstone for the book.As the author explains, one of the primary motivations for her pursuit of simplicity is her concern about the impacts of a consumerist lifestyle on the natural world. Mills touches on broad range of topics relating to that issue -- social justice, biological extinctions, the global economy, and also more personal aspects such as friendship, the process of country living, the joys of physical exertion, the challenges of a writer's life, and the natural history and seasonal delights of a life lived close to nature. An overarching theme is the destructiveness of consumerism, and how even a simple life affects a wide range of organisms and adds strain to the earth's systems. The author uses her own experience as an entry point to the discussion with a self-effacing humor and lyrical prose that bring big topics to a personal level.Epicurean Simplicityis beautifully crafted, fluid, inspiring, and enlightening, examining topics of critical importance that affect us all. It celebrates the pleasures, beauty, and fulfillment of a simple life, a goal being sought by Americans from all walks of life, from harried single parents to corporate CEOs. For fans of natural history or personal narrative, for those concerned about social justice and the environment, and for those who have come to know and love Stephanie Mills through her speaking and writing, Epicurean Simplicityis a rare treasure.

简介: "The author develops a solid framework that can help organizations direct their global strategic positioning. The use of many examples of both successful and unsuccessful organizations across many different industries is very unique and puts the book among the best that I have read in the last 10 years." —Avi Fiegenbaum, Area Head, Strategic Management, Technion "Alfred Marcus's new book Big Winners and Big Losers compares and contrasts the practices of successful and failing firms. Most importantly, his study offers thoughtful definitions, examples, and boundaries to each of the four best practices, which will help practicing managers apply the prescriptions to their own situations." —Will Mitchell, The Fuqua School of Business, Duke University "This book provides an excellent synthesis of the strategies that differentiate successful firms from the rest of the world. A must read for those looking to build high-performance organizations." —Ranjay Gulati, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University "The careful, detailed research in this new book reinforces an important theme: successful companies must be able to balance complementary and at times contradictory skills—agility to find the right markets, focus and discipline to succeed, and then agility again to re-focus and adapt as markets change." —Michael Cusumano, MIT Sloan School of Management, and author of The Business Software What keeps great companies winning, year after year, even as yesterday's most hyped businesses fail? It's not what you think—or what you've read. To find the real answers, strategic management expert Alfred A. Marcus systematically reviewed detailed performance metrics for the 1,000 largest U.S. corporations, identifying the 3.2 percent that have consistently outperformed their industries for a full decade (1992-2002). Many of these firms get little publicity: firms like Amphenol, Ball, Family Dollar, Brown & Brown, Activision, Dreyer's, Forest Labs, and Fiserv. But their success is no accident: they've discovered patterns of success that have largely gone unnoticed by their competitors. Big Winners and Big Losers shows you how these consistent winners build the strategies that drive their success; move toward market spaces offering superior opportunity; and successfully manage the tensions between agility, discipline, and focus. You'll learn how to identify the right patterns of success for your company, build on the strengths you already have, realistically assess your weaknesses...and generate sustainable advantage one logical, incremental step at a time.作者简介: Alfred A. Marcus is Edson Spencer Chair of Strategic Management and Technological leadership at the University of Minnesota, Carlson School of Management, where he has been on the faculty since 1984. At Carlson, he teaches and conducts research in strategic management, macroeconomics, business ethics, and business and the natural environment. He has also served as Visiting Professor at MIT's Sloan School of Management. Marcus is author or coeditor of eleven books and has published numerous articles in journals, such as the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, California Management Review, and The Journal of Forecasting. He has consulted and worked with many major corporations including 3M, Corning, Excel Energy, General Mills, and IBM.
简介:In order to equip hopeful graduate students with the knowledge necessary to pass the qualifying examination, the authors have assembled and solved standard and original problems from major American universities 鈥?Boston University, University of Chicago, University of Colorado at Boulder, Columbia, University of Maryland, University of Michigan, Michigan State, Michigan Tech, MIT, Princeton, Rutgers, Stanford, Stony Brook, University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison 鈥?and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. A wide range of material is covered and comparisons are made between similar problems of different schools to provide the student with enough information to feel comfortable and confident at the exam. Guide to Physics Problems is published in two volumes: this book, Part 2, covers Thermodynamics, Statistical Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics; Part 1, covers Mechanics, Relativity and Electrodynamics. Praise for A Guide to Physics Problems: Part 2: Thermodynamics, Statistical Physics, and Quantum Mechanics: "鈥?A Guide to Physics Problems, Part 2 not only serves an important function, but is a pleasure to read. By selecting problems from different universities and even different scientific cultures, the authors have effectively avoided a one-sided approach to physics. All the problems are good, some are very interesting, some positively intriguing, a few are crazy; but all of them stimulate the reader to think about physics, not merely to train you to pass an exam. I personally received considerable pleasure in working the problems, and I would guess that anyone who wants to be a professional physicist would experience similar enjoyment. 鈥?This book will be a great help to students and professors, as well as a source of pleasure and enjoyment." (From Foreword by Max Dresden) "An excellent resource for graduate students in physics and, one expects, also for their teachers." (Daniel Kleppner, Lester Wolfe Professor of Physics Emeritus, MIT) "A nice selection of problems 鈥?Thought-provoking, entertaining, and just plain fun to solve." (Giovanni Vignale, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Missouri at Columbia) "Interesting indeed and enjoyable. The problems are ingenious and their solutions very informative. I would certainly recommend it to all graduate students and physicists in general 鈥?Particularly useful for teachers who would like to think about problems to present in their course." (Joel Lebowitz, Rutgers University) "A very thoroughly assembled, interesting set of problems that covers the key areas of physics addressed by Ph.D. qualifying exams. 鈥?Will prove most useful to both faculty and students. Indeed, I plan to use this material as a source of examples and illustrations that will be worked into my lectures." (Douglas Mills, University of California at Irvine)
简介:Work and Revolution in France is particularly appropriate for students of French history interested in the crucial revolutions that took place in 1789, 1830, and 1848. Sewell has reconstructed the artisans' world from the corporate communities of the old regime, through the revolutions in 1789 and 1830, to the socialist experiments of 1848. Recent research has revealed that the most important class struggles took place in craft workshops, not in 'dark satanic mills'. Threatened less by the rise of the factory than by the disorder and competition of the emerging capitalist system, French craftsmen responded by forming labor organizations, mounting strikes, and eventually joining forces in a revolutionary socialist movement that aimed at ending the tyranny of the rich. In the 1830s and 1840s, workers combined the collectivism of the corporate guild tradition with the egalitarianism of the revolutionary tradition, producing a distinct artisan form of socialism and class consciousness that climaxed in the Parisian Revolution of 1848. The book follows artisans into their everyday experience of work, fellowship, and struggles and places their history in the context of wider political, economic, and social developments. Sewell analyzes the 'language of labor' in the broadest sense, dealing not only with what the workers and others wrote and said about labor but with the whole range of institutional conventions, economic practices, social struggles, ritual gestures, customs, and actions that gave the workers' world a comprehensive shape.
简介:These lecture notes are the content of an introductory course on modern, co-ordinate-free differential geometry which is taken by first-year theoretical physics PhD students, or by students attending the one-year MSc course, "Fundamental Fields and Forces" at Imperial College. The book is concerned entirely with mathematics proper, although the emphasis and detailed topics have been chosen bearing in mind the way in which differential geometry is applied to modern theoretical physics. This includes not only the traditional area of general relativity but also the theory of Yang-Mills fields, nonlinear sigma models and other types of nonlinear field systems that feature in modern quantum field theory. This edition of the text contains an additional chapter that introduces some of the basic ideas of general topology needed in differential geometry. A number of small corrections and additions have also been made. The volume is divided into four parts. The first provides an introduction to general topology, the second covers introductory co-ordinate-free differential geometry, the third examines geometrical aspects of the theory of Lie groups and Lie group actions on manifolds, and the fourth provides an introduction to the theory of fibre bundles. In the introduction to differential geometry the author lays considerable stress on the basic ideas of "tangent space structure", which he develops from several different points of view - some geometrical, others more algebraic.
简介:Much of the hoopla surrounding quality circles, teams, and high-performance work systems has been based on anecdotes and very thin evidence. It has not been established that those employee involvement strategies amount to anything more than another series of management fads or ruses designed to get more out of workers without giving them anything in return. This revelatory book, written by some of the skeptics, lays some of the suspicion to rest. Based on their visits to 44 plants and surveys of more than 4,000 employees, Eileen Appelbaum, Thomas Bailey, Peter Berg, and Arne L. Kalleberg concluded that companies are indeed more successful when managers share knowledge and power with workers and when workers assume increased responsibility and discretion. The study of steel, apparel, and medical electronics and imaging plants revealed much. In self-directed teams, workers were able to eliminate bottlenecks and coordinate the work process. In task forces created to improve quality, they communicated with individuals outside their own work groups and were able to solve problems. Expensive equipment in steel mills operated with fewer interruptions, turnaround and labor costs were cut in apparel factories, and costly inventories of components and medical equipment were reduced. And what did the employees think? The worker survey showed that jobs in participatory work systems often provide more challenging tasks and more opportunities for creativity. Employees in apparel had higher hourly earnings; those in steel had both higher hourly earnings and higher job satisfaction. Workers in more participatory settings were no more likely than others to report heavy workloads or excessive demands on their time. They were, however, less likely to report involuntary overtime or conflict with co-workers, and were more likely to be satisfied with their surroundings. Manufacturing Advantage provides the best assessment available of the effectiveness of high-performance work systems. Freestanding chapters near the end of the book provide full documentation of research data without interrupting the narrative flow.
