简介:
Between her birth and her death, Georgia O'Keeffe's life became as emblematic of modern American history as a Hollywood movie. Born in a small town, it was in New York that Georgia O'Keeffe created a name for herself at a period in the middle of the 20th century when the city took over from Paris as the heart of the modern art world. Born in 1887, Georgia O'Keeffe is one of the great figues in the history of the emancipation of modern art from its American essence. At a time when women were primarily wives and mothers, Georgia defied convention when she became first the companion, then the wife of the famous photographer and father of American modern art: Alfred Stieglitz. Georgia O'Keeffe is known above all for her complex visual de*ions of nature: the delicacy of an autumn leaf, the subtle nuances of a flower petal, or the symmetry of an animal's head. Today we associate the name of Georgia O'Keeffe with bright colours and the austere beauty of the New Mexican desert, where she lived until her death at the age of 98.
This work explores the personal journey of Georgia O'Keeffe, her creative process and the legacy that she left to the art world. It not only explores the experiences that shaped Georgia O'Keeffe at the beginning of her life, but it also informs the reader about her later years, when she was just as vibrant and prolific an artist as in her youth.

As always, the story is told with the author'scustomary gentle humour, heart-warming wisdom - and in his usualelegant prose, which is always a pleasure to read. A 'taster' forthe next volume: 'The Kalahari Typing School for Men' follows themain story.

Trade-Up! : 5 Steps for Redesigning Your Leadership and Life from the Inside Out
简介:
Silicon Valley wunderkind Rayona Sharpnack has been a schoolteacher, tennis champion, manager and player for a women’s professional softball team, and a celebrity who coaches some of the most successful leaders in business. Trade Up! draws on Sharpnack’s experience, as well as stories of successful leaders she has worked with, to reveal how leaders limit themselves by holding on to ideas or assumptions about ourselves—what she calls your “context” —that are no longer valid. Trade Up! outlines the 5 steps to help leaders gain awareness of these assumptions and trade up from limiting beliefs and behaviors to those that will help them change the world. The 5 steps are
• Reveal your context: what do you believe about yourself? What holds you back? How do you impact others?
• Own your context: take stock of the upside and downside of your context, and examine the intended and unintended consequences of it!
• Design a new context that gets you what you want: begin by asking yourself “how good are you willing to have life be?”
• Sustain your new context: develop new practices to get this new context to stick!
• Activate your context and engage with the world: move out of your own concerns and into partnership and community with others to help change the world around you!

Shoptimism: Why the American Consumer Will Keep on Buying No Matter What
Eisenberg
简介:
In this smart, engaging book, Lee Eisenberg, best-selling author of The Number: A Completely Different Way to Think about the Rest of Your Life, leads us on a provocative and entertaining tour of America's love/hate affair with shopping, a pursuit that, even in hard times, remains a true national pastime.
Why do we shop and buy the way we do? In a work that will explain much about the American character, Eisenberg chronicles the dynamics of selling and buying from almost every angle. Neither a cheerleader for consumption nor an anti-consumerist scold, he explores with boundless curiosity the vast machinery aimed at inducing us to purchase everything from hair mousse to a little black dress. He leads us, with understated humor, into the broad universe of marketing, retailing, advertising, and consumer and scientific research--an arsenal of powerful forces that combine to form what he calls "The Sell Side."
Through the rest of the book, Eisenberg leads us through the "Buy Side" -- a journey directly into our own hearts and minds, asking among other questions: What are we really looking for when we buy? Why are we alternately excited, guilt-ridden, satisfied, disappointed, and recklessly impulsive? What are our biases, need for status, impulses to self-express, that lead us individually to buy what we buy?
Are you a classic buyer (your head wants to do the right thing), or a romantic buyer (your heart just wants to have fun)? How do men and women differ in their attitudes towards shopping, and does the old cliche -- "Women shop, men buy" -- apply any longer?
Of special interest are the author's findings on the subject of What Makes a Good Buy? We all purchase things that we sooner or later regret, but what are the guidelines for making purchases that we'll never regret? What, for instance, defines the perfect gift?
Brimming with wit and surprise, Shoptimism will be delightful and instructive reading for anyone with a credit card and a healthy curiosity about American culture, through good times and bad. For here, in one vivid journey, is a memorable, panoramic portrait of our everyday self-delusions, desires, and dreams.

May,I miss your passionately appealing gazings and soul-communicating glances which once so overwhelmed and ingratiated me. Suppose I die suddenly tomorrow morning.
Suppose I change my heart and love somebody else, what then would you feel and what would you do?These are very cruel supposition. I know, but all the same I can’t help making them, such being the lover’s psychology.
Do you know what would I have done if in my coming back,I should have found my love no longer mine!Try and imagine the situation and tell me what you think.

“Number One” was a phrase my father—and, for that matter, mymother—repeated time and time again. It was a phrase spoken by myparents’ friends and by their friends’ children. Whenever adultsdiscussed the great Chinese painters and sculptors from the ancientdynasties, there was always a single artist named as Number One.There was the Number One leader of a manufacturing plant, theNumber One worker, the Number One scientist, the Number One carmechanic. In the culture of my childhood, being best waseverything. It was the goal that drove us, the motivation that gavelife meaning. And if, by chance or fate or the blessings of thegenerous universe, you were a child in whom talent was evident,Number One became your mantra. It became mine. I never begged myparents to take off the pressure. I accepted it; I even enjoyed it.It was a game, this contest among aspiring pianists, and although Imay have been shy, I was bold, even at age five, when faced with afield of rivals.
Born in China to parents whose musical careerswere interrupted by the Cultural Revolution, Lang Lang has emergedas one of the greatest pianists of our time. Yet despite his fame, few in the West know of the heart-wrenching journey from his earlychildhood as a prodigy in an industrial city in northern China tohis difficult years in Beijing to his success today.
Journey of a Thousand Miles documents theremarkable, dramatic story of a family who sacrificed almosteverything—his parents’ marriage, financial security, Lang Lang’schildhood, and their reputation in China’s insular classical musicworld—for the belief in a young boy’s talent. And it reveals thedevastating and intense relationship between a boy and his father, who was willing to go to any length to make his son a star.
An engaging, informative culturalcommentator who bridges East and West, Lang Lang has written morethan an autobiography: his book opens a door to China, where LangLang is a cultural icon, at a time when the world’s attention willbe on Beijing. Written with David Ritz, the coauthor of manybestselling autobiographies, Journey of a Thousand Miles is aninspiring story that will give readers an appreciation for thecourage and sacrifice it takes to achieve greatness.

By air, sea, and land the members of the Miami-Dade Crime Lab are called out. In a field outside the Everglades a balloon has just set down; the lone man inside the basket is dead -- an apparent suicide. A yacht riddled with bullets limps into the Port of Miami; only a gravely wounded hijacker survives, confessing that there are drugs somewhere on board, but he can't find them. A local journalist, looking to break out of the rat race with a novel based on the people he covers on his beat, is found dead.
In the yacht's galley is a record-setting sunfish that seems to be the key piece of evidence to just what was being smuggled on the ship, yet the lab is stumped when they discover no more than the normal parasites infesting the fish. A raunchy video of a citrus heiress having sex in a public place gives her the motive to kill the journalist-turned-novelist, but she has an alibi. All small pieces of the puzzles that Horatio Caine and the member of his team have to unravel to find out why all these people were killed. Before it is over the members of the Miami-Dade Crime Lab are caught up in an intrigue that reaches to the heart of Castro's Cuba.

"All I have learned, I learned from books," declared Abraham Lincoln — and this book offers ample learning from the sixteenth president's wise and often witty remarks. Drawn from speeches, letters, and other sources, these thoughts and opinions range from considerations of human nature and spirituality to the burdens and privileges of the presidency along with many other topics of enduring interest.Selections include comments on morality ("It has been my experience that folks who have no vices have very few virtues.") and the pursuit of happiness ("Folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be.") as well as friendship ("I'm a success today because I had a friend who believed in me and I didn't have the heart to let him down."), human frailty ("It's not me who can’t keep a secret. It's the people I tell that can't."), and other thought-provoking subjects.

简介:
It has been a decade since Tartt blazed forth with The Secret History, but it was worth the wait. Set in small-town Mississippi, her new work centers on the family of Harriet Cleve, shattered forever after the murder by hanging of Harriet's nine-year-old brother, Robin, when Harriet was still a baby. Harriet's mother has withdrawn, her father has left town (though he still supports the family), and Harriet and sister Allison are essentially raised by their redoubtable grandmother, Edie, and a gaggle of aunts who, though mostly married, are ultimately "spinsters at heart." Harriet grows up an ornery and precocious child who at age 12 determines that she will finally uncover her brother's murderer. Whether or not she solves the crime is hardly the point; what matters here is the writing-dense, luscious, and exact-and Tartt's ability to reconstruct the life of this family in vivid detail. Harriet in particular is an extraordinary creation; she's a believable child who is also persuasively wise beyond her years. That debut was no fluke; highly recommended.

Winner of a 2016 Newbery Honor, ECHO pushes the boundaries of genre, form, and storytelling innovation.
Lost and alone in a forbidden forest, Otto meets three mysterious sisters and suddenly finds himself entwined in a puzzling quest involving a prophecy, a promise, and a harmonica.
Decades later, Friedrich in Germany, Mike in Pennsylvania, and Ivy in California each, in turn, become interwoven when the very same harmonica lands in their lives. All the children face daunting challenges: rescuing a father, protecting a brother, holding a family together. And ultimately, pulled by the invisible thread of destiny, their suspenseful solo stories converge in an orchestral crescendo.
Richly imagined and masterfully crafted, this impassioned, uplifting, and virtuosic tour de force will resound in your heart long after the last note has been struck."
